Saltburn 1937

Ah, Saltburn with a long pier, a little before my time ,but I do remember the long pier. Julie Riddiough updated us with: “The end was washed away with a storm in October 1974.”

Loftus Junior School Football Team, 1961 – 1962

The obviously successful Loftus Junior School Football team with their trophy in 1962 are:

Front row: Jimmy Smithies, Paul Chester, Howard Jackson, David Smithes, Derek or David Hampton.

Clearing the Moor

The MT section transported the Bomb Disposal men and their equipment over to the Fylingdales moors every day, down Lythe Bank, through Sandsend and Ruswarp.  Their job was to clear unexploded munitions and other objects that had been left over from when the Army used the area as a firing range with their tanks.  They were clearing the moor ahead of the contractors building RAF Fylingdales. The designated drivers stayed out on the moor with them.  At lunchtime a two ton Austin truck took hot meals out to the men.

Liverton Mines

A cold snowy picture of the railway line from Carlin How to Loftus; had you crossed the footbridge and followed the path it would have taken you down onto Glover’s Path where Whitcliffe mine once was and then onto the bottom of Mill Bank leading you to either Loftus or Carlin How.

Bomb Disposal Work

It was soon observed that the MT (Motor Transport) drivers were wasting time sitting in their vehicles for most of the day.  They were told to help the BD (Bomb Disposal) lads, doing different duties, moving tapes and the occasional digging.

Shale Tips

Taken from Kilton Lane, Carlin How, we can see the shale tips of Liverton Mines with the mine just visible in the background. Graham Suggett asks: “When was the reservoir at Liverton Mine filled in?” Can anybody assist with a date?

Leisure

When off duty, the men played cricket and football on camp.  They walked to the village of Goldsborough and to Kettleness and down to the beach at Runswick Bay.  They went boating at Ruswarp and visited Hutton le Hole in an old Standard Eight car.  They got to Scarborough and Durham as well.

Saltburn Pier

Quite a bit different from the pier as it now stands, it has gone through two shortening exercises in recent years, but look at the buildings – two of them – minus the noisy amusement arcade we have today, but obviously just as popular (there could be a moral here somewhere!).

Loftus County Modern (Rosecroft)

A very early picture of Rosecroft, (or as it was titled in those days Loftus County Modern School) possibly before it officially opened. David Archer has informed us that it opened in early 1963, so presumably this photograph was taken before the opening. This actual image came to us from Colin Hart and was the feature picture for a school calendar for 1965.
