Sandsend Looking North West

This is a view that we don’t normally see as we drive through Sandsend; the card was posted in December, 1904. Thanks to Peter Appleton for pointing out that the original caption for the image was incorrect: “This isn’t “looking east”. The coastline here runs approximately east-west. This view is looking approximately north-west.

In the Office 1974

I Agree

Yes I would have been there with these women, can you recognise anyone? Believed to have been taken outside the chapel building in Skinningrove and also containing several men, but date is unknown. Can anybody assist?

Suffer Little Children

That’s what the banner says behind these men, but who were the men, what was the occasion and what group do they represent?

Back row: ? Knight, ??, ??, John Waite?, ??, ??, ??, ??, ??, Fred Simpson, ??, Morris Brignall, ??.

Front row: Colin Riley, ??, Brian Shaw, ??, Chris Williams, Eric Parker, ??.
Now correct me if I am wrong (and I know you will) but the man second right front row is it Eric Parker from East Loftus?
Chris Bailes has told us that the photograph has been taken inside ’The Cong’s.’ The church had a men’s group that met on Sunday afternoons. Julie Riddiough commented: “The verse says “Jesus said suffer little children to come unto me” I have seen it on a grave in Brotton old cemetery, it’s from the bible, (Matthew).” Perhaps this room was usually used for the Sunday School and this would always be visible during ‘lessons’.

Do You Know These Children?

Okay own up were you one of the children in this photograph, believed to have been taken at Skinningrove? Be brave tell us if you were.

Nearly Finished

The caption for this photograph originally stated: “Bridge across jetty bank nearing completion, July 1950”; sadly it no longer exists! Some sixty years later even the jetty is no longer used by the steelworks.

Grinkle Mine

This improved image of Grinkle mine replaces an earlier image which the Archive now has to hand. The mine was abandoned in 1934, hence very little survives to this day. The Archive also requested further photographs or information viewers would like to share with us?

Not Even This Now

A photograph taken after Skinningrove station was closed; signboard and platform are all that remain!

Loftus Footballers 1933/4

Loftus Senior School Football Team of 1933/34, in the familiar strip sponsored by the Golden Lion (believed originally black shirts with red collars and yellow/golden lion emblem. But do you recognise anyone in the photograph?

Sandsend and Lythe Bank

This view of Sandsend and Lythe bank is from a postcard, post marked with the date of 7th June, 1919. Perhaps from a holiday post World War I and all its horrors.
