Staithes L.S.A. Company, 1889

The Life Saving Company were responsible for rescues from the shore, firing a line to a vessel in distress.  Other ropes and pulleys were then hauled out to the vessel and the crew brought ashore one by one.  They would be the forerunners of the Coastguard Auxiliary Service. Mr. Conn’s grandfather, Jack Bennison, is standing beside the two men higher up at the back.

Staithes L.S.A. Company, 1894/5

The members of Staithes rescue company grouped down by the beck or harbour in Staithes. L.S.A.’s were formed in several parts of the country and they would be the forerunners of the Coastguard Auxiliary Service. We have not many names for the members, but Ray Con could tell us Jack Bennison is 3rd from the left on the back row. Can anybody assist with any other names?

St. Leonard’s Church

A slightly different view of St. Leonard’s church Loftus (St Leonard is the patron saint of prisoners) and is of St Leonard’s before addition of the north aisle, in 1901. During this period the town hall was used for services while rebuilding took place, a question “Is the town hall still consecrated?”

Skinningrove

St. Helen’s church stands high on the hill, with the two rows of Furnace Cottages clearly seen. There was a date stamped on the photo which said December 12th 1904, maybe this is the date of the photograph. The image is taken from ”Cooke’s Views of Loftus and District” an album of views around Loftus produced by Cooke’s Fancy Bazaar of West Road, Loftus.

Loftus Church

Now known to be a hand-tinted postcard view of St Leonard’s, but were unsure of the date. St Leonard’s had the addition of a north aisle in 1901; however the iron railings are still around it so we know it was before they took the railings during the Second World War and before gravestones were laid flat. Most likely period is 1905 to 1912, unless anybody knows better?

St. Leonard’s Church

This view of the interior of St. Leonard’s Church in Loftus is from a postcard published by George Skilbeck, a Loftus photographer and stationer.

Loftus, St Leonard’s Parish Church

An exquisite hand-tinted image of the Parish Church at Loftus; part of the Cooke’s Fancy Bazaar series; dating from pre 1906. Eric Johnson tells us that hand tinting was very popular then. Although the grounds today are more well-tended, the building was and still is a popular image to capture.
