St. Mary’s Church, Whitby

A further image from – “Photographic View Album of Whitby” – photographed and printed by Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee; the scene is very little changed today. Although the gravestones in many cases are now almost indecipherable!

The Piers, Whitby

Although this has a look of a Frank Meadows Sutcliffe image; it is taken from – ”Photographic View Album of Whitby” – photographed and printed by Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee. Dating from pre-1911, as the now familiar pier extensions were added in 1912.

Loftus – West End Chapel

Foundation stone laying ceremony of the ill-fated chapel at the end of High Row and Hartington Street; this postcard image by T C Booth of Loftus shows an array of younger members of the potential congregation or were they just keen to get in the picture? This building had to be demolished following the landslip in 1927, being relocated to Deepdale Road. Marjorie Magor tells us: ” Many people (bought a brick) hence the initials on the sandstone one`s. I know my family did (DADD) Also the (ELDERS) family on Cliffe Crescent.” Yet again no further details of date, people involved etc. Can anybody help?

Fred Rivet, Jean Busomworth and Florrie Duck

Fred Rivet pictured outside the shop which was situated across the forecourt from his garage, with to his right, Jean Duck (nee Busomworth) and her sister-in-law Florrie Duck in 1973. Mrs Duck  was a United bus conductress, her husband Alan had bought the garage at the time; he demolished the little shop when he bought the garage. In its lifetime had been many things, including a sweet and ice cream shop with tables outside.

Dance at Brotton (1930’s)

Ever wondered what your grandparents did on an evening (apart from make clippie mats)? Well, they danced to live entertainment. This is the old (wooden) Church Hall in Brotton which Neil Abram tells us: ”the old parish hall was NOT in the church grounds but the other side of the “black ash” footpath…. about where St Margarets Way is now”. Alan Franks tells us: ”My mam and dad are on this photograph, dad is right at the back off centre right, and mam sat at the front next to the man off centre right again. I don’t think they were married then, they married in 1935 I think.”

Image courtesy of Julie Riddiough and many thanks to Neil Abram for the correction details, also to Colin Hart and Alan Franks for updates.

Loftus Cricket Team (1939)

Loftus Cricket Club 1st XI pictured at Marton in 1939, having won the Cleveland Challenge Cup (solid silver); it is still played for today. The other trophy is the Kerridge Cup and was first played for in 1911 and was won by Liverton Mines. Both cups are still played for today.”
