Bathing Pool

The outdoor bathing pool near to the Spa on South Bay, Scarborough. It fell into disuse after the war and is no longer used.

Holbeck Gardens

This 1908 Postcard of Scarborough, shows a view of Holbeck Gardens. Could the hotel on top of the cliff be the Holbeck Hotel which attracted much attention, a few years ago. It gradually collapsed over the cliff, after the big landslip?

Rigg Mill

A hand coloured postcard, of one of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe’s, superb compositions, Surprisingly printed in Germany!

Valley View

Valley View

This Frith’s postcard is a view towards Carlin How from Mill bank; we can see the aerial rope way machinery for the buckets of ironstone from the mine to the works. The old North Loftus mine chimney still stands, the head-gear for Carlin How mine (Duck Hole) has disappeared; it closed in 1945. The railway bridge over Carlin How hairpin bend part of the zig zag line down to Skinningrove is still standing (removed in 1958); as is the old road bridge further up the bank.

Brunswick Street

Whitby Brunswick Street, a Raphael Tuck postcard posted in 1904. At least three churches are in view, can any of our knowledgeable viewers name them please?

Sandsend Beach

A fine summers day at Sandsend in 1950. The railway viaduct over Sandsend Beck, which carried the scenic Loftus to Whitby line is prominent as is the station. The station was used in a film around this time. Peter Lee tells us: ”The film was ‘Holiday Camp’, made in 1947 – not by Ealing, but the poor relation of British movie-making – Gainsborough Pictures. Right at the beginning of the film, an LNER train pulls into Sandsend station from the north. I am told the holiday camp featured thereafter was at Filey.”

Kilton (Loftus) Bank

A fine hand coloured Edwardian postcard, of Loftus Mill Bank, (called Kilton Bank here).
Of interest is the gates leading to the park on the right, the road is much wider now at this point. In the distance on top of the cliff, the works are only a small part of what it later became. Skinningrove (Loftus) mine in the valley, still has the large chimney, with the steam raising boilers used to power the mine.

Special Constables Loftus

The title is all we have to go with – kindly donated – but we seek guidance. We believe from the background it is close to Skinningrove works, but that makes the puzzle more interesting. Loftus Specials at Carlin How, why? Can anybody help?

Reg Wilson has advised: ”I believe that the person back row 4th from right is my father, George Wilson, Late of 35 High Row, Loftus.”

Many thanks to Reg Wilson for that update.

Who is This?

Lots of discussion about this photograph, not only do we not know who it is but what is the regalia he is wearing? Put us out of our misery and please tell.

Julie Riddiough tells us: ”Could be the ”Buffs” my great great grandad and his sons were founding members of the Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes Provincial Grand Lodge, the Skelton Lodge were called ”Old Royal George” we have one of his medals/badges”.

Image supplied by Reg Wilson and many thanks to Julie Riddiough for that update.
