The front row are sitting on a plank between two saw \u201chorses\u201d (benches). They maybe joiners, tub repairers etc., also on the front row some men appear to be wearing oilskins (shaft workers ??). Simon Chapman\u2019s book\u00a0\u201dSouth Skelton Mine\u201d has a photograph contemporary with this dated 6 days after this image\u201d.
