This was the job you got when you left school in the pit villages of the North-East \u2013 these lads look about 14 &#8211; their job was to open and close the ventilation doors as the horses and tubs came through. \u00a0They\u2019re possibly\u00a0wearing \u201dminer\u2019s heels\u201d which were an attachment to the workers boots of the time \u2013 you knew you\u2019d been kicked if you got a ding from these! \u2013 the lads are carrying\u00a0Tinplate \u201dmidges\u201d by the look of them, they used candles in the earlier days, later\u00a0carbide powered midges were used.\u00a0 Part of a larger group image, which can be viewed later in the Archive.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>Now known to be part of the workforce of the Boulby and Grinkle mines, Trappy Lads were present in all mines.
