Saltburn Who's Who

Carole whose father was Mr Fred Woodrow, says that she vaguely remembers being present when this photograph was taken at the Dr. Barnardo’s Home in Saltburn.

Standing at the back: ??, ??, Mayor of Redcar (Alderman Thomas Alexander Dougall), Mr. F. Woodrow, Mr J. C. Pickering, ?? Head of Saltburn School,  Rev. Berriman (Emmanuel Church Saltburn).

Front:  Mrs Dougall (Wife of Mayor of Redcar), Mrs.Woodrow, ??, Mrs N. Pickering.

Callum Duff tells us: ”This is the official photograph for the 1951 ‘Festival of Cleveland’ event held at The Dr Barnardos Home, ‘The Ridge’ at Saltburn. The home closed in 1969 and was demolished to make way for the cul-de-sac of Executive-style houses, also called The Ridge which now occupy the site.”

This is the official photograph for the 1951 ‘Festival of Cleveland’ event held at The Dr Barnardos Home, ‘The Ridge’ at Saltburn. The home closed in 1969 and was demolished to make way for the cul-de-sac of Executive-style houses, also called The Ridge which now occupy the site. I have a film showing some of the event and the cameraman shows this photograph being taken. I was unsure of the identity of the individuals so thank to those who have supplied the information. Unfortunately, I am bound by the laws of privacy and I am unable to screen the film publicly. Anyone wishing to obtain a copy should contact Barnardos directly.

I recently bought a colour cine film from the Barnardos archive which features the ‘Festival of Cleveland’ event and this photograph being taken. It forms part of a promotional film showing the work of the Barnardos charity in Saltburn and other homes in Yorkshire.

I am look for the Sturman family of Marske. My grandfather, Fred Jepson and Catherine Sturman. I am wondering if they were man and wife. Fred had another family in Middlesborough, married to Eva Gertrude Gosling, which produced 2 children, a daughter and a son. Fred and his brothers used to play soccer for Spennymoor United, and he was a cooper by trade. Am interesting in hearing anything from the Sturmans of that tree. John Sturman came from Wicklewood, Norfolk and married Catherine Robinson, they had 9 children. Thankyou.
