Guisborough Football Club 1905

We have names for all the members of this 1905 team for Guisborough, but we particularly like the two gentlemen on the right, complete with bowler hats!

Back row: A. Old, G. Stevenson, T. Smith, J. Kirkconell, H. Mann, W. G. Batterbee, C. Peacock (Captain), J. Coulthard, W. Pybus, H. Bowmaker.
Front row: R. Wright, T. Pattinson, R. Williams, T. Darnton, W. Pearson, A. Williams, C. B. Robson (Trainer). Penny Hoskins comments: “My grandfather was W. Pearson, seated second from left on front row. I have a silver medal that he won in 1903-4 season. So excited and rather emotional seeing this as I never met him and have no clear photographs of him. Thank you .”

Driving Instructors

We had no date for this image or any information regarding persons present or location. Keith Bowers has now advised us: ”The details on the reverse of this photograph bear the details as: Driving Instructors 3 M.T.T.C. Dreghorn Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland 1943.”

Mill Bank Loftus

Another sunny day on Loftus Mill Bank. this view from a Salmon Series postcard shows a 1950s United bus on its way towards Loftus. Interesting you can still make out the bridge under the road which carried ironstone, etc., from the Whitecliff mine (to the right in this photograph) down to Skinningrove mine.

Whitby Swing Bridge

The old swing bridge at Whitby, prior to 1909. With the buildings on the left of the bridge known as ”Boots corner”; were demolished in a road widening scheme in 1975.

Dale House January 1983

An image of Dale House, looking across the Ridge Lane ford in January 1983. Despite being taken in that early in the year the weather appears to be remarkably mild. No snow or a raging torrent through the culvert of this section of Ridge Lane as it commences rising out of Dale House.

Raw Pasture

Close to Robin Hoods Bay; Raw evokes an image of a cold and unwelcoming placed. How unlike the delightful hamlet it actually is!

Men Working on Repairs to Guisborough Priory

In 1932 The Office of Works (now English Heritage) carried out excavations and undertook repairs to consolidate the walls and grounds so they could be opened to the public.

Guisborough 1933

The visit of H.R.H. Prince George (Duke of Kent) in 1933 saw him visiting parts of East Cleveland including Guisborough. This is believed to be a visit to the foundry; here Prince George appears to be inspecting the work of a blacksmith. Bill Danby advises: ”The Royal in the photograph is Prince George, Duke of Kent, the fourth son of George V and not the second, who was Duke of York and future King George VI. The Duke of Kent was visiting Heartbreak Hill, Magra and Charlton’s Ironstone Mine on the 16 Feb 1933, so this image was probably taken the same day. He was killed on the 25th August 1942 when the flying boat he was in with 13 others flew into a hillside in Caithness.  You can just make out “Northern Echo Photograph” bottom right.”

Seymour Hill

A lovely shot of Seymour Hill. What date would you put on this photograph? We think early 1900s.
