I Promise I Won’t Make a Mess!

This image possibly taken at Holme Farm, Hinderwell in 1914/15 features (from left to right): Joseph Henry Tyerman (b.1911), Annie Tyerman(b.1914), Vena Tyerman (b.1908), Elizabeth Mary Tyerman (b.1912). We got the spelling incorrect as has been pointed out by Elaine (Joseph’s daughter). She has also told us that her aunt Annie died in December 2013, aged 99 years, 9 months and 15 days. A good life! Ruth Pattinson (nee Tyerman) advised: “Regarding the lovely picture of Joseph Henry, Annie, Vena and Elizabeth Mary Tyerman; they appear in my family tree. Their great grandfather Joseph Tyreman born 1827 was the brother of my great great grandfather James Tyreman born 1837,the son of Stephen born 1789 in Great Ayton and Eliza nee Taylor born 1801. We have found in the records searched that there are various ways of spellng our surname eg Tyreman / Tyerman / Tireman / Tyers etc in the various records researched. Thank you also to Elaine Meadows for the interesting photographs and information.

Loftus and District Arts Club Plays 1953

As part of the Coronation Celebrations held in Loftus on 1st June 1953, the Loftus and District Arts Club presented three one-act plays in the Town Hall. The cast in this image we are told were (from left to right): Dora Dack, Maurice Trembath, James Duffy, James Cush, Olga McLaren, Irene Fowle, Jean Peel, Joan Dickens. Helen Cook tells us: ”According to the photograph belonging to my Mother the late Irene Fowle, the play was Fools Rush In.”

Tyne House 1906

That is what it says on the back of this photograph and Tyne House was at East Loftus; with the shop of Mr C Jones next to it. No I do not remember it, as it is dated 1906 and I am not quite that old. But after visiting today I think the shop is number 1 Tyne Street. Keith Bowers brought us an identical image in black & white which he believed to be from the 1890s. We realised that the two were identical, although the image on site was slightly better in condition.

The Old Pack Horse Bridge – Stokesley

This image of the Grade II listed bridge in Levenside Stokesley was built in the 17th or early 18th century and features in many images of the town. It came to the Archive as a glass plate negative, believed to date from the early 1900s.

Bog House Farm

The Coulson family farmed at Bog House in the early 20th century, the farm and house now long disappeared under the waters of  Scaling Dam; along with another farm. Jo Halliwell commented: “This was my fathers family, my dad was born here; not sure who is in the picture. Would love to see more pictures if any available.” Stephen Coulson advises: “We are the very same Coulsons, still in Newby which is where the cattle and everything else was moved to.” Angela Crosthwaite comments: “My relative Robert Featherstone lived here with his family in the late 1700s (I think!).” Whilst John asks: “Any one else got any photographs of the dam being built?”

Image courtesy of Mrs Wilkinson via Keith Bowers, thanks to Jo Halliwell, Stephen Coulson and Angela Crosthwaite for the updates on the Bog House and the Coulson family. Can anybody assist with John’s request?

Bus Crash at Kilton Mill

A different view of the bus crash from the 1950s showing the United bus still in the stream, viewed from the Loftus side of the bridge, possibly from the former railway line that linked Whitecliffe mine with Loftus (Skinningrove) mine.
