Loftus Child Welfare

The title is taken from the reverse of this image but gives no indication of date, it appears to be the committee or a specific group; possibly connected to Loftus Women’s Institute. Can anybody assist?

Whitby 12 – Fishing Boats in the Harbour

This area adjacent to the fish quay, shows a Pier Road uncluttered wiuth amusements, fish and chip shops or hotdog stalls. How much quieter it must have been for the returning fishermen?

Whitby 11 – Spa Pavillion

Not many people on the beach in this view, perhaps the throng on the paths are returning from the beach or an event at the Spa?

Whitby 10 – 199 Steps

The obligatory view of the 199 Steps to the church and Abbey. Is the lady going to church with hymn book in hand or snatching a quiet read whilst the children rest before ascending?

Whitby 9 – Kyber Pass and West Cliff

Viewed possibly from the top of the 199 steps, Kyber Pass with East Terrace above seems devoid of traffic. A quiet day in Whitby?

Whitby 8 – Harbour from the Sea

The solitary fishing cobble seems dwarfed by the west pier lighthouse, in this view from the sea. Again a very calm sea, perhaps the photographer did not get seasick this time?

Whitby 7 – The Abbey

The almost regulation view of the Abbey over the pond and for a change no cows intrude into this aspect.

Whitby 6 – West Cliff and the Harbourside

The view probably taken from the eastern side of the swingbridge presents a wonderful panorama of the harbourside and the towering buildings on East Terrace of the West Cliff.

Whitby 5 – East Cliff and Abbey

A view over the outer harbour, including St Mary’s Church and the Abbey. The waters of the harbour almost mirrorlike.

Whitby 4 – West and East Piers

The piers viewed from possibly the Battery area or from Kyber Pass.
