Skinningrove Juniors

Elizabeth Mellor played the queen, Ronnie McConnell the king and Derek Preston the cook, in this production at Skinningrove school. Elizabeth has told us that Mr. Sayers organised this event and took the photo. He was teaching at the school after coming out of the Army and this was a Christmas production. Mr Tom Sayers has provided an update: “Yes, I took the photograph. It was a Christmas play. I had served in the RAF, not the Army though.”

Image and information courtesy of Elizabeth Mellor; thanks to Mr Sayers for the update.

Brotton Hippodrome

The date is on the newspaper cutting, 24th. April 1934, from our cuttings file (in the main from the Evening Gazette); with all that remains of the Hippodrome at Brotton after a fire.

Milk For The Workmen?

Yes 1936 and the workmen were given milk; which appears to be gladly accepted by the men.

Image are from our cuttings file (in the main from the Evening Gazette).

Barring Out

Barring out calcined ironstone from kiln after roasting, taken to weighbridge and then placed on lift platform prior to raising to the charging platform at top of the furnace. Note the almost nappy effect on the workman’s trousers; this is in fact a protective pad (made from discarded belting) to protect from the heat which came from the calcined ironstone in the barrow. An early version of PPE!

“Nifty Cap”

I am told by Eric Johnson who loaned this image that the man in the nifty cap is Mike Swales, can you name the other man?

South Skelton Mine

Well I couldn’t go wrong with this photograph could I? The name of the mine and the owners in plain sight on the building. The mine was situated close to Boosbeck and closed in 1954.

Jetty Bank

Steam driven hauler on jetty bank about 1914, looking down towards the jetty.

Ship on Westscar

The reason I posted this photograph is because I love it, now gentlemen or ladies can you tell me anything about it? Fred Brunskill tells us: ”The brig ‘John and Mary’ left Portsmouth for Sunderland carrying ballast when she was forced ashore at Saltburn on 28th October 1880.” Vanessa Liddle asks: “My great grand father was drowned in a brig from Seaham called VINTAGE which ran into difficulties on Saltscar rocks does anyone have any information. A storm on October 10th 1881 . This is all I have managed to find out . Any information would be appreciated.”

Image courtesy of Mike Holliday, thanks to Fred Brunskill for the update. Also to Vanessa Liddle for her enquiry.

Drivers

Yes bus drivers left Alan Chilton and right Frank Birtwhistle at the United garage East Loftus about 1962. The garage was later taken over by Arriva and is now closed.

Keeping The Streets Clean.

Charlie the horse stands waiting patiently on Arlington Street; while Buzz Havelock, Gerry Readman and Mr Bibby sweep the rubbish from the streets of Loftus.
