Royal Visit, Loftus – 16th February, 1933

HRH Prince George made a two day visit to Middlesbrough and East Cleveland to see for himself the plight of the unemployed. Loftus was included in his visit after visiting Heartbreak Hill at Boosbeck and Margrove Park. This view shows him talking to World War I veterans paraded outside the shops at the West Road/Station Road junction. Helen has advised the Archive: “Sydney Ashmore is the man without the cap talking to Prince George.”

Identification of any of the people in the picture would be most welcome.

Duke of Kent’s Visit – 16th February 1933

We also have this other view of  the visit of H.R.H. Prince George, the Duke of Kent, visiting Loftus in 1933. It must have been taken from above the shops, this would provide a clear view of the Prince. This would be prior to his viewing the World War I veterans, as in our other image of the Loftus visit. There’s a good crowd at the other side of the road, in front of the Congregational Church.
