Beggar’s Bridge

I think we all know the story of Beggar’s bridge, when a poor man loved a rich girl and went away to make his fortune to build the bridge. Well here it is in winter with the river so frozen that they could skate on it, image dates from c.1900. Was it frozen in the cold of last winter?

Ironstone Miner’s Celebration July 1988

The parade started from Loftus Leisure Centre. Some of the children, parents and teachers from Harry Dack Infant School are sorting out their banner; Mrs Bowman, Mrs Hitchen, Mrs Pressick and Mrs Byrne are all in the picture. This set of images was taken on Saturday, 16th July, 1988. Jean Wilson tells us:”This is my son Greg (Wilson) holding the banner up but don’t know the occasion.”

I can’t remember much about the occasion. Can anyone help with more information?

Strike up the Band

The start of the parade for East Cleveland Ironstone Miners Celebration Demonstration Day, Loftus 1988. All the best parades have to have a band; this parade was led by North Skelton Silver Band.

Stepping out

I had forgotten how many different organisations had made banners and took part in the parade.  North Skelton Silver Band, leading the Revival banner, followed by Easington; were you there?

Carlin How and Others

More groups setting off from the Leisure Centre with their banners; communities, organisations and schools all joined in.

More Colourful Banners

I think the colourful banner in front of this group was from Rosecroft School, with Whitecliffe Primary from Carlin How further back.

Harry Dack on the March

Mrs. Hitchen and Mrs. Horness helped the children with Harry Dack School’s banner along West Road; followed by Warsett School. The parade went along West Road, up Westfield Terrace and Westfield Way to the football field. I believe there were stalls and activities up there but can’t remember any details. Can you tell us more?
