Whitby Harbour and Bridge

This image from – “Photographic View Album of Whitby” – photographed and printed by Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee, is very reminiscent of other pictures by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe; particularly the inclusion of the eternal ‘urchins’ to create a point of interest in the image.

West Cliff, Whitby

Another tremendous image from – “Photographic View Album of Whitby” – photographed and printed by Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee, it is amazing how good the town looked then (and still does), when viewed as a new visitor or an ‘old’ regular to the town!

Whitby from Larpool

This image of Larpool, from – “Photographic View Album of Whitby” – photographed and printed by Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee, shows the River Esk without the now familiar road bridge crossing; so avoiding the congestion that often occurs at the swing bridge.

Robin Hood’s Bay from East

Another by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe with this image from – ”Photographic View Album of Whitby” – photographed and printed by Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee. The Album showed many places around Whitby which could be visited as part of a series of daily tours when visitors wanted to explore the local area.

Falling Foss, near Robin Hood’s Bay

Frank Meadow Sutcliffe again; with this image from – “Photographic View Album of Whitby” – photographed and printed by Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee. Falling Foss is still as popular in modern times and remains a favourite haunt for families regardless of the season!

Whitby Abbey

Another image from – “Photographic View Album of Whitby” – photographed and printed by Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee. It is interesting to note that even in the late Victorian period artists took delight in capturing images of the Abbey, or perhaps she was more interested in the scaffolding on the side walls.

East Cliff, Whitby

A lovely view of a paddle-steamer in Whitby harbour, the image is from – “Photographic View Album of Whitby” – photographed and printed by Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee. There are other images (usually from hand-tinted postcards) of paddle-steamers in the harbour; at one time Whitby was a regular calling point for short cruises by paddle-steamers on the north-east coast.

Rigg Mill, Whitby

One of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe’s masterpieces! The image from – “Photographic View Album of Whitby” – photographed and printed by Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee.

The Saloon, Whitby

More popularly known as “The Spa” these days! This image is from – “Photographic View Album of Whitby” – photographed and printed by Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee.

Whitby Abbey from East

This image is definitely by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, he was possibly commissioned to take this and many others in the book – “Photographic View Album of Whitby” – photographed and printed by Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee.
